Measuring your ceiling height and determining where the bottom of your chandelier should hang can save time during install.
Chandelier to floor height.
Choose a chandelier that will hang no lower than 7 feet above the floor to allow for head clearance.
12 feet less 5 feet 60 inches would give you a chain length of about 7 feet.
If the chandelier hangs directly over a table then you can go lower.
For example if your ceiling is 10 feet high you might hang your chandelier 6 inches higher than you would in a room with an 8 foot ceiling.
Then i typically hang so the lowest crystal ball drop is 7 7 5 feet off the floor or to a height where a 6 person can reach and touch the lowest crystal drop.
If you have an extremely high ceiling you can hang the chandelier 7 5 feet from the floor.
A common rule is 2 5 to 3 inches for every foot of height for the room.
For rooms where people walk under the fixture it should be at least 7 above the floor.
If the chandelier hangs from a 2 story ceiling don t let it hang lower than the height of the first floor.
It doesn t matter the size of your table you need to be concerned about the height of the fixture from the floor.
For design professionals the rule of thumb is that the bottom of a hanging lighting fixture should be no closer than 7 feet above the floor.
If your table is 3 feet tall 36 inches then all you need to do is add 36 inches to your table height to get the exact height from the floor from which your chandelier should hang.
Plan to locate the bottom of your chandelier between 7 and 7 5 feet off the floor.
For example if your ceiling is 10 feet high you should limit your chandelier height to about 25 to 30 inches.
This provides ample head clearance.

This range assumes you have an 8 foot ceiling.
The height of the chandelier itself corresponds to about 2 5 to 3 inches for each foot of the ceiling height.

If the ceiling is higher the recommended standard is to raise the chandelier 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height.
Hang chandeliers at least 7 feet above the ground in living rooms and entryways with standard 8 foot ceilings and hang them around 8 feet high with taller ceilings.
Ideally if your ceiling height can accommodate it you want to allow 7 feet 6 inches from the bottom of the chandelier to the floor.
In most cases it should be 60 inches from the floor to the bottom of the fixture.
