The preferred method for tile installations is to use a sheet of underlayment.
Ceramic tile over 3 4 plywood.
Secondly i would never tile directly over the plywood as this video seems to imply is acceptable.
Lay down a vapour barrier overtop the concrete pad then fasten 3 4 inch plywood using a ramset to the concrete pad through the vapor barrier then install the heating system to the plywood followed by applying the self leveling mortar over top the heating system and plywood and finally installing the tiles over top that.
This means you can have a 3 4 inch wood subfloor covered by 1 2 inch plywood cement board or approved gypsum fiber underlayment.
It should be fastened to the subfloor using thinset and then screwed down every 10 square.
For wall installations plywood is overkill beneath the concrete or fiber board which is designed in five eighths inch material for wall settings.
I am laying pebble rock tiles over a 3 4 plywood sub floor covered with a membrane and sealed with red gard.
Thank you for all the informative posts.
I am using a polymer modified mortar.
Space the field and edge fasteners correctly the top layer of plywood should be screwed down every 8 inches on the edge and every 6 inches in the field or interior section.
Concrete board concrete board also called backer board comes in 1 4 and 1 2 thicknesses and is usually sold in 4 x 6 sheets.
The tile guys used thin set mortar to glue down 3 4 plywood over the subfloor and they screwed the plywood to the subfloor every 3 in all directions.
I ll either use 1 4 inch cement backerboard or a proprietary product like schluter ditra.
The area is 5 5 so i am not too concerned with some of the fears i have read about in the previous posts.
There are two materials commonly used for laying ceramic on plywood or osb that are applied before the tile.
I aim for 3 4 inch underlayment when possible and i ll settle for 5 8 inch if the transition to another room will be trouble.
Tile installed over wood floor systems must have a minimum of 1 1 4 inches of solid material beneath it.
Big marble tiles this is a big time savings benefit.
However i did find that the previous installer had put another sheet of 1 2 plywood over the 3 4 inch plywood subfloor.
Space out the board joints.
To install ceramic tile over wood the wood surface must be structurally sound enough to support the weight of the tile.
